What Does a Vocationally Informed Church Look Like?
Scatter helps pastors become vocationally informed in their worship, discipleship, and mission.

Before Scatter is Adopted
The “Sacred / Secular Gap”
Congregants feel that work is a necessary evil, and/or the only “good” or “important” work falls into pastoral or missionary work.
Pastoral Disconnect
Congregants feel like a stranger in their own church because they don’t feel their pastors actually know what they do or why their work matters.
Disembodied Worshippers
Congregants feel they have to “leave work at the door” when they enter their worship gathering.
General Missions & Outreach
Congregants feel their abilities and gifts are not a blessing to their neighborhood, communities, and ministry partners, because they’re only asked to do vague acts of service.
After Implementation
Integrated Faith & Work
Pastors help congregants see their daily work as a vital part of God’s mission, bridging the gap between Sunday worship and Monday work.
Pastoral Championing
Pastors use Scatter to affirm their congregation’s specific work and the goodness of it, ensuring all congregants are known, affirmed, and commissioned into their daily work.
Whole-person Worship
Pastors regularly engage in prayers, commissioning, and liturgies that connect with their congregants as workers, inviting them to bring their whole selves to the worship service.
Contextual Service
Pastors align the unique skills and passions of their congregation with specific community needs, empowering congregants to offer more meaningful, impactful, and personal support.

"And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ."

Frequently Asked Questions
What makes Scatter different from other survey or engagement tools?
Unlike generic survey platforms, Scatter is built specifically for pastors to understand the daily work, skills, and passions of their congregation. It is rooted in a theology of vocation, designed not just to collect information but to help pastors know, affirm, and commission their congregants into their respective spheres of influence.
How long is the survey? How many questions are there?
The Scatter survey takes about 5-7 minutes to complete for those who are using their smartphone. The survey is about 25 questions long, depending on your daily work.
What questions are asked in the survey?
The Scatter survey asks questions about your congregants’ daily work, skills, and passions— paid or unpaid. It includes questions about occupation, industry, practice, and support. The goal is to provide pastors with a rich, actionable picture of how each person connects their faith to their daily life. To see a full list of questions, check out the Scatter Quick Reference Guide in your Scatter platform.
Can I change, add to, or remove any of the questions in the survey?
No. Scatter’s survey is intentionally fixed to protect the integrity of the insights and ensure a consistent experience for every congregation.
Who should fill out the survey?
Scatter is for everyone 18-or-older in your congregation, whether they are employed, retired, volunteering, caregiving, homemaking, parenting, studying, or seeking work. We believe God values all forms of daily work, not just paid employment, and Scatter is designed to affirm the faithfulness of every calling as measured by contribution, not compensation.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTION
Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Suspendisse varius enim in eros elementum tristique. Duis cursus, mi quis viverra ornare, eros dolor interdum nulla, ut commodo diam libero vitae erat. Aenean faucibus nibh et justo cursus id rutrum lorem imperdiet. Nunc ut sem vitae risus tristique posuere.
What’s the best way to deploy Scatter?
If deploying to your entire congregation, we recommend allocating time during your weekly worship service to deployment, likely during an existing liturgical element like your announcements or prayers of the people, or having it be your sermon application. We also suggest sending out the survey via email, text, or church app as your church will receive a unique QR code and URL.
How often should I deploy Scatter?
After your initial launch, we suggest incorporating Scatter into your new member process, and running an annual update to keep your information up to date.
What type of response rate should we expect?
Standard Scatter survey response rates are between 30-40% of your adult congregants.
What happens after we deploy the survey?
As soon as one person completes the survey, your Scatter platform will begin to populate with their data. As more people respond, you’ll be able to explore trends, discover larger themes, and view individual responses. Scatter also includes resources to help you present your findings back to your congregation.
Who owns this data, and who has access to it?
Just like when you use a tool like Google Forms, both the church account admin and Scatter own the survey data. Only the account creator and those whom they invite to join the platform can access the individual responses.
Does Scatter connect to my ChMS?
At this time, Scatter does not directly integrate with ChMS platforms. However, you can easily export all data as CSV files, which can be merged into your ChMS using email addresses or names.
How does the annual subscription work? What happens if I unsubscribe?
Your subscription provides full access to Scatter for one year and will automatically renew unless you cancel. If you choose to unsubscribe, your data remains safe—you can still log in, view individual responses, and download your information. However, features like insights, risk indicators, resources, and tutorials will no longer be available without an active subscription, nor can you collect new responses unless you have an active subscription.
How does the free plan work?
The free plan gives you full access to Scatter for up to 50 survey responses, making it a great resource to try with your elders, leadership team, or board. If you collect more than 50 responses, Scatter will continue gathering data, but you’ll need to upgrade your plan to unlock anything beyond that limit.
Is Scatter a spiritual gifts assessment?
No, Scatter is not a spiritual gifts assessment in the theological sense. While it gathers information about the professional and personal skills of your congregants, it does not attempt to define or categorize Spirit-given gifts. However, many pastors have found Scatter helpful when teaching on spiritual gifts, as it offers a rich picture of how God has uniquely equipped their people through both natural abilities and life experiences.
Can I use this if I’m not the pastor of a local church?
While there’s nothing technically preventing you from creating an account, Scatter is designed specifically for pastors to use with their congregations. The survey is built to help pastors understand, care for, and mobilize their people, and many of the questions are intended to be answered in the context of a local church.
Who’s behind Scatter?
Scatter is a product of Made to Flourish, a national nonprofit that equips pastors and churches to integrate faith, work, and economic wisdom for the flourishing of their communities. Learn more and request a free box of resources at www.madetoflourish.org.
