Course Description Our 21st century, postmodern society makes it easier for Christians to compartmentalize their lives and to separate the sacred from the secular. This is a practical course that helps participants understand that God is in all spheres of life and that he calls his Church to be the incarnational model of hope. The Blue Collar Challenge: Connecting Faith and Human Labor

Presenter: Kent Duncan
May 17 @ 10:30 am - August 16 @ 11:30 am CDT

Introduction Contemporary blue-collar employees often fail to appreciate the biblical significance of ordinary human labor. Consequently, they perceive work as a necessary evil while frustration and alienation characterize time spent on the job. Empirical research suggests that blue-collar workers have a significantly lower sense of divine purpose, calling, and giftedness in relation to their work, and consistently see themselves as less connected to their workplaces strategically and relationally than do white-collar workers. To address this discrepancy, a sermon series, discussion…

One thing I appreciated about the Compassion Group was the willingness to struggle with complex issues. Not only did we grapple with a more developed sense of poverty – relational, spiritual, and economic – but also with complex solutions. The benefit has been a fresh evaluation of our ministry practices and metrics. It was helpful to get to know the other pastors and their struggles with these issues and to visit FCS Ministries and see in practice the approaches we discussed.  My hope is that I leave this experience asking better questions and having more discerning eyes to evaluate our processes of service and exchange.  As an outreach pastor, this is invaluable.

Pastor Doug Rowland, Pastor at Outreach Ministries & Attendee of Compassion Workshop

My time with the Made to Flourish Preaching Virtual Workshop has been personally enriching. I have enjoyed engaging a group of leaders who seek to disassemble the walls of false understanding often erected between sacred and secular work.  These leaders are helping their congregants realize that everything they do, including their work, is part of God’s call. Programs like these are vital for our spiritual leaders. It provides them a space to learn and fellowship with other leaders and it helps them forge a common purpose together.

Dr. John Byron, Professor at Ashland Theological Seminary & Leader of Preaching Workshop

The Compassion Group with Bob Lupton helped me organize my thoughts and challenge my assumptions about effective compassionate outreach. An online forum is a helpful way to gain new ideas for ministry.

Kyle Bushre, Pastor of Outreach and Missions at King Street Church in Chambersburg, PA
