Pastoring in a Polarized World: A Third Pathway Beyond Anger and Fear (LA)
May 11, 2017 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm PDT
Presenter: Dr. Charlie SelfFree
Join us for lunch and discussion, as Dr. Charlie Self guides us with insight on pastoring in a polarized world.
Even in local churches that share common moral and theological convictions, political and social differences are fostering anger and fear among women and men, eroding harmony in congregations and presenting pastors with the challenge of creating new conversations and cooperative actions that can overcome the divides. At the same time, churches are facing increased hostility and marginalization as their central role in the common good is eroded or ignored.
Made to Flourish is a national network of pastors dedicated to the common good and the integration of Sunday worship and Monday work. Whole life discipleship connects spiritual formation with the goodness of daily work and the vitality of local churches with the transformation of their communities.
Dr. Charlie Self will be offering insights on how a clear vision of discipleship and economic and social transformation can forge a third pathway that will unite people of diverse cultural, political and social opinions. This highly interactive time together will include
· Biblical understanding of human flourishing and outcome-based discipleship
· The church as “trans-partisan” – creating safe and thoughtful space
· Connecting our discipleship to community outreach
· Integrating faith and work into our worship, learning, outreach and pastoral practices – learning from each other
· “Go and flourish” – everyone is on mission at work
Dr. Charlie and his wife Kathleen are celebrating 37 years of marriage and shared mission, including local church pastorates across the USA, missionary work in Belgium, consulting, speaking and teaching in several universities and seminaries. Kathleen is a professional artist and speaks concerning the divinely-given desire for beauty and thoughtfulness. They live in the Denver, CO area and have three adult children.
Lunch is included at this free event.
